Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden is a Dutch basketball club based in Leiden . The club was three times national champion.

history

The club was founded in 1958 as Bona Stars . In 1967 the club played its first season in the highest Dutch basketball league, the Eredivisie. It had meanwhile changed its name to BS Leiden and was used against the larger teams, such as B. Amsterdam the team had no chance. This changed in the period that followed. Mercasol Leiden , as the club was now called, penetrated the top group, but regularly failed early in the play-offs. When Parker became the main sponsor, the team won the championship for the first time, in the final they defeated Punch Delft .

The enthusiasm for basketball increased after winning the title. In 1979, Leiden played against Den Bosch in front of 11,000 visitors in the Groenoordhallen , which is still a national record today.

The club also drew attention at the European level when they only failed in the semi-finals of Emerson Varese in the European Cup Winners' Cup .

The Leiden team could not repeat the achievements from the title year in the long run.

In 1983 Elmex took over as namesake, they still won the rather insignificant Haarlem Basketball Week , before Elmex stopped its commitment and the club voluntarily relegated for financial reasons.

After more than two decades of insignificance, the club, now sponsored by Zorg en Zekerheid , returned to the first division in 2006. You could re-establish yourself in this and in 2011 became champions for the second time. They won the Dutch Cup in the same season and in 2012. In the EuroChallenge , they made it to the second group stage in 2012.

The third championship was won in 2013.
