The Zaniolepididae are a family of three species of marine fish found in the northeastern Pacific from Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska , along the east coast of North America to Baja California .

features

The fish have a more or less elongated, laterally flattened body covered by ctenoid scales , a pointed head and reach lengths of 15 to 30 cm. They are gray, brown or reddish in color. The first and second dorsal fins have grown together and are only separated from one another by an indentation. There are three to four hard rays in the anal fin. The only sideline is fully developed.

Systematics

The Zaniolepididae was introduced in 1882 as the subfamily family Zaniolepidinae within the family Hexagrammidae by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Charles Henry Gilbert for the genus Zaniolepis . In 2014 the group was raised to family rank and the anemone guardian ( Oxylebius pictus ) was assigned to the family on the basis of morphological and genetic studies.
