Prowfish is a fish from the order of Perciformes (Perciformes) and the only member of the family Zaproridae. The animals live on the rocky coasts of the North Pacific from California via Alaska , the Aleutian Islands , Kamchatka to Japan , from shallow water to a depth of 675 meters.

features

Zaprora silenus becomes 88 centimeters long, has an elongated, laterally compressed shape and a dorsal fin that takes up most of the body length and has 54 to 57 fin rays . The anal fin has three hard and 24 to 27 soft rays. Ventral fins as well as lateral line organ and swim bladder are missing. Its body is covered with small cycloid scales.

Little is known about the reproduction of Zaprora silenus . In contrast to the bottom-dwelling adults, the juveniles are pelagic . They seek protection from predatory fish under jellyfish .
