Zara Rutherford (born 2002 or 2003 in Brussels ) is a Belgian-British pilot who, as a 19-year-old, performed a solo circumnavigation of the world in a light aircraft from 18 August 2021 to 20 January 2022 . She wants to get an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

Life

Zara Rutherford was born in Brussels to pilot Sam Rutherford and lawyer and pilot Beatrice De Smet. She started training for her pilot 's license when she was 15.

As a 19-year-old solo pilot, Zara Rutherford wants to break the record set by the then 30-year-old Shaesta Waiz , who circumnavigated the world in 145 days in 2017.

The Shark Aero UL light aircraft , registration OM-S443 , has a 73.5 kW Rotax 912 ULS internal combustion engine driving a variable two-blade propeller. The undercarriage is retractable, the cruising speed is up to 260 km/h.

The flight route was westbound from Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in Belgium via Great Britain, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, US East Coast, Bahamas, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, US West Coast, Alaska, Russia Far East, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Indonesia again, Sri Lanka, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece and Bulgaria. On January 15, 2022, after taking off from Sofia - the headquarters of the main sponsor ICDSoft - it reached the airfield of the aircraft manufacturer Shark Aero in Senica in Slovakia . On January 16, 2022, she had to cancel the planned flight to Frankfurt-Egelsbach in the morning due to bad weather in Benešov ; with better weather conditions on January 19, 2022, she finally reached Frankfurt-Egelsbach. On January 20, 2022, the last stage brought her back to where she started, Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport.
