Zatokrev (… Zato Krev, Czech … for blood) is a sludge and post-metal band founded in Basel in 2002 .

history

Zatokrev was founded in April 2002 in Basel by Frederyk Rotter, Silvio Spadino and Marco Grementieri. Her first demo recordings, which were made entirely in the rehearsal room, were favorably received by several of the recorded labels and published as an album in 2004 by Codebreaker Records , in 2005 by Earache Records in Europe and America and in 2004 by Division Records in Switzerland.

In 2006 Stench joined the band as the second guitarist, with whom the own label Czar of Crickets was founded. The second album Bury the Ashes was first released on Czar of Crickets after Codebreaker Records filed for bankruptcy and Zatokrev could not release the already written album. The later Europe-wide distribution was guaranteed by Firebox Records . Stench left Zatokrev again in 2007. The position of guitarist was filled several times in the following years. Between 2009 and 2010, the two co-founders, Spadino and Grementieri, left the project in friendship. According to Rotter, both “developed other priorities while [he] wanted to do more with ZATOKREV”. The exit of the two founding members temporarily jeopardized the continued existence of the band.

The third album, released in 2012, was recorded by Rotter with a completely changed line-up. Despite the change in personnel, Zatokrev signed a contract with the internationally active British metal label Candlelight Records . This first album released on Candlelight The Bat, the Wheel and the Long Road to Nowhere is considered the most successful album of the band. The following albums continued to appear on Candlelight Records. For the 2015 album Silk Spiders Underwater… Tobi Glanzmann, who replaced Julien Duseyau, again changed guitarists.

style

The band's style is attributed to post-metal and described as a mixture of sluggish metal, noise and driving rhythms. As the core intention of the style, Rotter states that the "sound [of the band] had to be sluggish and distorted," and that the result was most effectively described as a "mixture of Doom Metal and Post Hardcore [sic!]". Early interpreters of post-metal and sludge such as Neurosis and Crowbar are often used as a benchmark . Compared to neurosis, zatokrev are sometimes referred to as epigones . Rotter confirmed the influence of neurosis.

"It is definitely no secret that NEUROSIS have inspired us."

- Frederyk Rotter

An “apocalyptic atmosphere” is ascribed to the music, which demands “attention and active discussion”. Rotters singing is compared to Kirk Windstein from Crowbar, while the music is mainly said to be close to Neurosis. The music moves almost continuously in the "range of low notes and low speed".
