Zbigniew Cywiński (born February 12, 1929 in Toruń ) is a Polish civil engineer and university professor.

Life

In 1949 Cywiński began studying at the Politechnika Gdańska (TU Danzig). He wrote his diploma thesis in 1953 with Stanisław Błaszkowiak on the subject of steel bridges. He then received an assistant position at his chair and worked in the project office for railway construction. Since Cywiński wanted to devote himself to theory, he switched to the Chair of Building Mechanics in 1956, which was then held by Witold Nowacki . With the exception of Cywiński's teaching activities abroad and at the Faculty of the Technical University of Danzig, he remained connected to the Chair of Building Mechanics, which he was head of from 1993 to 1999. In 1964 he completed his doctoral thesis on an extension of the theory of warping torsion, the abridged version of which, Torsion of the thin-walled rod with a variable, simply symmetrical open cross-section , was published by Cywiński in the journal Der Stahlbau that same year . In 1968 Cywiński's habilitation took place; However, he was only appointed professor in 1978 and worked as a university professor at the Technical University of Danzig until 2000. He made himself available to the Faculty of Construction at his university from 1984–1987, 1993–1996 and 1996–1999 as Dean of the Faculty of Construction.

With his research on the generalization of the theory of warping torsion by WS Wlassow and the systematics going back to FW Bornscheuer , Cywiński masterfully expanded the framework for the theory of thin-walled constructions. This research direction remained a constant in Cywiński's scientific work.

In parallel to his work in Poland, Cywiński also worked abroad. 1965-1966 he went as a consultant to the University of Baghdad and from 1970 to 1973 as an assistant professor at the Higher Engineering School in Mosul . From 1979 to 1980 he was a UNESCO expert in Mogadishu and from 1987 to 1988 he was a professor at the University of Tokyo . "The Japanese experiences", noted his Gdansk colleague Jerzy Ziółko , "finally enabled him to comprehend the world of technology holistically". A testimony to this is Cywiński's commitment to the preservation of historically significant engineering structures - such as the old bridges in the Vistula Delta near Tczew (Dirschau 1857 and 1891). In 1993 he and Waldemar Affelt founded a series of conferences on this topic at the Technical University of Danzig, the fourth of which took place in 2005. Cywiński was also active in the field of engineering biographies. He supported Karl-Eugen Kurrer in his monographs on the history of structural engineering with material on Polish scientists in structural engineering, structural mechanics and structural engineering: Maciej Bieniek , Roman Ciesielski , Ryszard Dąbrowski , Maksymilian Tytus Huber , Feliks Jasiński , Witold Nowacki , Wacław Olsz and Witold Wierzbicki .

Cywiński took part in the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) as Alternate Delegate to the Permanent Committee and member of the Working Commission 7 Sustainable Engineering. At the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) he was a fellow and charter member of the Structural Engineering Institute.

Cywiński penned over 750 publications, a third of them in English and German. He not only submitted numerous manuscripts for the journal Stahlbau, but was also an active member of the scientific advisory board until the end of 2018; Cywiński has been an honorary member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Stahlbau since the beginning of 2019. Cywiński published numerous book reviews in Inżynieria i Budownictwo, Inżynieria Morska i Geotechnika and Archives of Civil Engineering.

Of the honors that Cywiński received, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Professor Stefan Kaufmann Medal of the Polish Association of Civil Engineers and Technicians (Polski Związek Inżynierów i Techników Budownictwa: PZITB) should be mentioned.
