Jerzy Ziółko

Jerzy Ziółko (born November 29, 1934 in Radom ; † July 13, 2020 in Danzig ) was a Polish civil engineer and university lecturer.

Life

Jerzy Ziółko attended elementary and high school in Radom. He then studied civil engineering from 1952 to 1957 at the Politechnika Gdańska ( Danzig ) and gained his first experience as an engineer at Mostostahl, where he rose to the position of chief engineer in the assembly line. At the same time he did research from 1958 to 1962 at the Chair of Steel Construction at the Technical University of Gdańsk, where he received his doctorate in engineering with the dissertation Some problems connected with the industrialization of the assembly of large-capacity rolled steel containers , for which Ziółko received the Minister of Higher Education Prize in 1965 .

1966/1967 Ziółko worked for several months as a research assistant at the Chair of Steel Construction at the Moscow Institute for Civil Engineering , which was headed by Professors EN Lessing and EI Byelanya. From 1969 to 1973 he held the post of Deputy Director of the TU Gdańsk and then until 1975 the post of Director of the Institute of Civil Engineering. In 1979 Ziółko was appointed professor at the TU Gdańsk. His habilitation took place in 1989 with the text Metal Containers for Liquids and Gases , which he published three years earlier at Arkady Verlag in Warsaw. From 1994 until his retirement in 2005 he headed the chair for steel construction at the TU Gdańsk. Since 1998 Ziółko has also been teaching and researching at the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz , which awarded him an honorary doctorate on November 28, 2012.

Ziółko's technical and scientific oeuvre includes over 300 publications, including 16 books in which he was involved or for which he was solely responsible. In 2003 he and Karol Heidrich edited the series of country booklets Stahlbau in Europa of the journal Stahlbau , founded by Karl-Eugen Kurrer in 1997, on the thematic booklet Steel Construction in Europe: The Contribution of Poland . Ziółko also played a key role in the further development of the Polish conference series International Conference on Metal Structures , founded in 1958. For example, for the 12th conference taking place at the Politechnika Wrocławska in Wroclaw in June 2011, Ziółko acted as Chairman of the Scientific Committee and co-editor of the proceedings. At the conference u. a. before: JF Demonceau (Belgium), J. Farkas (Hungary), M. Heinisuo (Finland), R. Helmerich (Germany), K. Jármai (Hungary), K.-E. Kurrer (Germany), DA Nethercot (Great Britain), H. Pasternak (Germany) and I. Vayas (Greece). The international standing of the steel construction scientist Ziółko is also reflected in his appointment to the Editorial Board of Steel Construction - Design and Research magazine in 2009.

In 2004, Ziółko was appointed an external member of the Ukrainian Academy of Construction. Ziółko was elected chairman of the Metal Structures Section of the Civil Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2007. In addition to the successes in teaching and research, for which he and his students have received numerous honors from the Polish government, Ziółko worked as an expert for industry. Mention should only be made of his advice on the expansion of the operation to use the friendship oil pipeline in Płock and his commitment as a designer of the double-walled steel tanks with a capacity of 75,000 m³ for the large-scale oil refinery in Masyr ( Belarus ) , which was inaugurated on September 30, 2003
