Zdeněk Jánoš (born May 11, 1967 in Kněžpole , † September 15, 1999 in Prague ) was a Czech football player . In the late 1990s he was one of the best Czech goalkeepers. In 284 first division games, Zdeněk Jánoš stayed 105 times without conceding a goal, making him a member of the ligových brankářů club .

Career

Zdeněk Jánoš started playing football at Sokol Kněžpole. At the age of 16, the goalkeeper moved to Slovácká Slavia Uherské Hradište . Jánoš did his military service at Dukla Prague and VTJ Tábor. In 1988 he was obliged by Slavia Prague and after a few months ousted Luboš Přibyl as regular goalkeeper.

At Slavia, Zdeněk Jánoš made a name for himself not only as an excellent goalkeeper, but also as a lover of fast cars. Outside the square, Jánoš was considered problematic, he liked to party and often paid fines. He enjoyed communicating with the audience during the game and occasionally took penalty kicks. His weight, which was 1.86 meters tall, was mostly around 100 kilograms.

In the 1992/93 season Jánoš survived 586 minutes of play without conceding a goal, a record at Slavia Prague that is still valid today ( as of February 2007 ). When the club signed Jan Stejskal in 1994 , Jánoš moved, disappointed by the club management, to FK Jablonec . He received an offer from China in the summer of 1998, but returned home after ten days.

A year later he moved as a great hope to Dukla Příbram , where he only made six games. On September 15, 1999, he returned with his car from a training session in Příbram to his Prague apartment, collided with a city bus on the opposite lane and died at the scene of the accident. At the time of his death, Jánoš was considered the best goalkeeper in the Gambrinus League .

At the end of 1999 he was posthumously elected Personality of the Year in Czech Football. In his honor, a youth tournament and an indoor football tournament are held annually in his birthplace, Kněžpole , both of which are called Memoriál Zdeňka Jánoše .
