The bill Caroline was a coal - mine in Holzwickede .
As early as 1736 carried coal production in Natorp over the Caroliner Erbstollen towards Hixterwald, the approximately 4300 m ahead was. Most of the coal was delivered to the Königsborn salt works . When the coal reserves were exhausted in 1840, the mining of the tunnels was stopped.
The first underground excavation shaft of the Caroline colliery was dug in 1855 as a test shaft. Support at Zeche Caroline began with two other shafts 1856. First, to promote tonnlägige used bays at the Massener road, funded from 1876 exclusively on the new mine in Willingen versions.

Almost 500 miners were affected by the shutdown on May 31, 1951. They either lost their jobs or were transferred to other pits in the area. Representing the miners who lost their lives underground or above the dangerous work, the miner Friedrich Menncken should be mentioned as the last victim of the colliery . Even after the official shutdown, he had a fatal accident on October 31, 1951.

Today, among other things, the historic mining circuit Holzwickede is located in the area of the Zeche Caroline .
A youth home is now housed in the former administration building of the colliery.
