The Caspar & Balthasar colliery in Sprockhövel in the Gennebreck district is a former hard coal mine . The mine emerged from the merger of the two mines Balthasar and Caspar.
Mining history
Little is known about both predecessor mines. The Caspar colliery was already dismantled in 1717 . The Balthasar colliery was also known as the Balthaser colliery . Work was carried out on an Akeldruft at both mines in 1739 , but initially no hard coal was encountered . The Balthasar colliery was in operation in 1754 and 1755. At that time, the Caspar colliery was within deadlines . The reason was that the seam could no longer be found. From 1755 the mines were run under the common name Caspar, Melchior & Balthasar. At that time, twelve miners were working on the jointly managed, but still separately mining, mine. According to the records of the weather office, a Mr. Kreishöter was working as a shift supervisor at the mine in 1755 . However, due to his lack of writing skills, he was unable to write the invoices himself. The heirs Cramer, Peltzer and Kleyer were registered as trades . The mine was operational in 1756. In 1789 both mines were entered on the Niemeyersche map . According to the map, Balthasar was 200 meters north of Elberfelder Strasse. According to the map, Caspar was 350 meters north of the intersection of Stöcken and Elberfelder Strasse. Before 1831 it was merged into the Caspar & Balthasar colliery. In 1831 the mine was in operation, there was one shaft in operation. It is not known when the mine was closed.
