The Johann Zeche was a hard coal mine in Steele . The mine belonged to the Essen Mining Authority.
Mining history
In 1809 the prospect for the Johann pit field was introduced. A length field was awarded on September 22nd, 1827 . The Johann colliery was probably in operation from 1830. In 1856 an experimental shaft with a length of tonnes was sunk . The shaft was sunk in the Mausegatt seam. Mining began in the second quarter of the same year . In the following year a steam engine was put into operation. In this machine, there was a combined machine, at the same time as a carrier and the water retention was used. In 1858, the barrel-length shaft was sunk deeper. The shaft now had a shallow depth of 30 puddles under the bottom of the tunnel. At this depth, a cross cut was made to open up the Krebsenscheer seam. At a shallow depth of 44½ Lachtern, the weather bed was added. On September 30th of the same year the square was awarded to Margarethe. The only known workforce figures come from this year, 52 miners were employed at the mine. In 1859 the Johann colliery consolidated with other mines to form the United Johann colliery .
