Zeitgeist (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ZeitGeist was a German band that existed from 1980 to 1983 and is attributed to the NDW , but was more of an experimental rock band with jazz elements and German lyrics.

Band history

The group emerged in the late 1970s from the previous formation Firma 33 , which combined German texts with musical forms of jazz rock . 7/8 or 13/8 bars and crooked meters were predominant, plus there were intelligently constructed songs with texts that politically commented on everyday situations and current events.

The members of company 33 were: Rüdiger Selle (vox, dr), Matthias Witting (keys, vox), Matthias Hanselmann (git, vox), Richard Wester (sax, vox), Jürgen Heck (sax), Joachim Wanzlick (bg) .

In 1978 there was a joint appearance with the Nina Hagen Band. The company 33 project ended when the drummer Rüdiger Selle died from cancer . Guitarist Hanselmann and keyboarder Witting were looking for new musicians and found in Marianne Langfeldt a singer who vocalically resembled Nina Hagen, in George Kranz an experimental drummer and in Axel Kottmann from the GRIPS Theater a bassist; they also played for and with Ulla Meinecke .

The debut LP "Zeitgeist" was released in May 1981 on the Biber Records label and was presented live on a total of three tours in Germany, including the peace demonstration in Bonn's Hofgarten in 1981 (largest German post-war demonstration). In 1982 the second album "ZeitGeist" followed and a tour through Germany and Switzerland. The third album "Give me time!" from 1983 is characterized by the heavy use of wind instruments. The group differed considerably from the NDW retort groups in their ambitious compositions; a commercial breakthrough was denied the band.

During his time with Zeitgeist, Kranz published solo recordings, Hanselmann im then made a solo single and went to the SFB as radio editor - until today. Kottmann continued to work with the GRIPS theater band, to which Kranz had already joined in 1981 and where Witting was only accepted in 1986. Marianne Langfeldt took part in BAP studio recordings in 1982 and founded her own band "Move the Blue" in the 1980s.
