The journal for chemistry was published since 1961 on behalf of the chemical society of the GDR and was an important German-language scientific journal in the field of chemistry . The focus - similar to the journal Angewandte Chemie in the Federal Republic of Germany - was on reviews and short messages in the fields of organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry as well as physical chemistry .

The first editors were Heinz Dunken , Lothar Kolditz and Elmar Profft . Helga Dunken and Roland Mayer later became co-editors.

After the Chemical Society of the GDR ended its activities in 1990, the publication of only one journal with a corresponding profile - namely the journal Angewandte Chemie - was considered appropriate by the executive boards of the chemical societies (including the GDCh ). For this reason, the publication of the journal for chemistry was stopped in December 1990.
