Zeitter & Winkelmann

Zeitter & Winkelmann was the oldest piano manufacturing company founded in Braunschweig . It was founded in 1837 by Christian Ludewig Theodor Winkelmann .

Company history

In the house at Wollmarkt 3 in Braunschweig, Christian Theodor Winkelmann initially manufactured table pianos with four to five employees , soon also grand pianos . In 1851 Friedrich Zeitter joined the company as a partner, among other things he introduced the crossing of strings and iron frames. The annual production could be expanded to 60 to 80 instruments.

In 1888 a new building was erected in Hildesheimer Strasse, which was expanded in 1924. That same year it was 30,000. Piano produced. In the 1920s Zeitter & Winkelmann, the Schimmel company, also based in Braunschweig, and a few other piano manufacturers merged to form "Deutsche Pianowerke AG". This association dissolved again in the 1930s, with Zeitter & Winkelmann and Schimmel remaining independent.

The production facilities were destroyed by the bombing raid on Braunschweig on October 15, 1944 ; however, Rudolf Winkelmann jun. the rebuilding of the company in Leipziger Strasse. In 1963 he sold the Zeitter & Winkelmann company to the Seiler Pianofortefabrik in Kitzingen.
