Christian Ludewig Theodor Winkelmann , also Winckelmann (born November 3, 1812 in Braunschweig ; † February 7, 1875 there ), was a German piano manufacturer .

Life

Winkelmann was the son of a master carpenter. He had initially worked for the violin maker Carl Rautmann in Wolfenbüttel (see Rautmann Geigenbau ) and founded a piano factory in Braunschweig in 1837. Initially, 3 table pianos were manufactured in the house on Wollmarkt , later the production of grand pianos was added. In 1851 , through Henry Litolff's mediation , the Viennese piano manufacturer Friedrich Zeitter joined this production as a partner who introduced some innovations such as frames made of iron. This enabled production to be increased to 60 to 80 instruments per year. The company traded under the name Zeitter & Winkelmann and was one of the most important piano factories in northern Germany. In 1860 Winkelmann was appointed ducal court piano supplier.

Winkelmann's sons Hermann and Hans Winckelmann became opera singers .

Since September 2018 a personality plaque in Braunschweig has been commemorating Christian Theodor Winkelmann, the founder of Braunschweig's oldest piano manufacturing company.
