Zeno Meloni ( December 6, 1911 in Rome - July 1984 ibid.) Was an Italian painter and engineer.

Life

Zeno Meloni was born in Rome on December 6, 1911. He was the fourth son of Giovanni Meloni and his wife Giovanna Meloni, who came from Cineto Romano . In 1920 his father founded a steelworks in Rome that specialized in the manufacture of hydraulic components.

After graduating from Liceo Classico Torquato Tasso in Rome, he studied hydraulic engineering at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, which Zeno completed in 1938. From 1941 to 1974 he worked in his father's foundry, which was closed in 1974. In 1941, while on vacation in Tagliacozzo, he met Maria Pia Cappai, whom he married in 1945.

In 1926 he began to paint at the age of 14. The reason for this was the meeting - in Cineto Romano - with the painter Giuseppe Ciotti (1898–1991), who then frescoed the local church of San Rocco. Zeno asked if he could help him as an apprentice, and since then the master-apprentice relationship has developed into a close, lasting friendship. On weekends they drove out of town together to paint, and they often went on trips with their wives.

Zeno Meloni painted his entire life without ensuring that his works would be known. He gave away some paintings to friends and relatives; but he never thought of exhibiting or selling them. After a quiet life, he died in Rome in July 1984.

The rediscovery of his works

In 2011, the art historian Paola Lauro Argan discovered more than 500 forgotten works that had never been exhibited in an attic. Argan then published a monograph on Zeno Meloni, and in 2012 the first exhibition was held in Rome.
