Centers for communication and information processing in teaching and research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Association Centers for Communication and Information Processing in Teaching and Research eV (ZKI Association, ZKI for short), the computer centers of the universities , technical colleges , technical colleges and research institutions in Germany cooperate . The ZKI was founded in 1993; its forerunner in the Federal Republic of Germany was the Working Group of Heads of Scientific Computing Centers (ALWR); In the GDR, the university computer centers, which were later renamed the organization and computer center, worked together in various working groups or groups. The ZKI has 256 members (February 20, 2017).

founding

Only the computer centers of the German universities and technical colleges were represented in the ALWR. After reunification, the number of members increased sharply because in the GDR no distinction was made between universities and technical colleges; there was also the fact that the computer centers of the universities of applied sciences were striving for an independent cooperation as in the ALWR. That is why the ALWR developed a new form of cooperation for all data centers, which led to the founding of the ZKI on June 9, 1993 in Berlin.

According to the statutes, the association's organs are the general assembly, the board of directors and a main committee. The cooperation in the narrower sense takes place in working groups in which not only managers (as in the ALWR), but also employees of the data centers are represented. There are the core working groups for university and technical college computer centers as well as subject-oriented working groups such as B. on supercomputing or e-learning . The speakers of these working groups form the main committee together with the board.

The history of the cooperation between the data centers in the ALWR up to the founding of the ZKI has been dealt with in detail, s. ALWR .

purpose

According to the statutes, the purpose of the association is to promote information processing in teaching and research. The association supports the centers for communication and information processing represented in it - the computer centers - in fulfilling their tasks, in particular through

  • Organization of the exchange of opinions and experiences,
  • Stimulating cooperation between the centers as well
  • Advice and cooperation with institutions promoting education and science within and outside Germany.

For this purpose, the association can, in particular, issue statements on its behalf, set up regular services, organize conferences, issue publications, form working groups and set up commissions with temporary tasks.

activities

For the exchange of views and experiences, the ZKI organizes two conferences a year at changing locations - a spring and an autumn conference - with scientific lectures and meetings of working groups.

In addition to the core working groups for university and technical college computer centers, there are currently the following subject-oriented working groups:

  • education
  • Campus management
  • E-learning
  • IT security
  • IT strategy and organization
  • Multimedia and graphics
  • Network services
  • Service management
  • Software licenses
  • Supercomputing
  • Directory services
  • Web
  • Central systems

The working groups form the focus of the ZKI's content-related work.

Just like the GI / ITG specialist group for communication and distributed systems (KuVS), the ZKI uses the specialist journal Praxis der Informationsverarbeitung und Kommunikation (PIK) as an association journal.

The ZKI represents the interests of IT providers in research and teaching vis-à-vis politics and associations. He maintains relationships with organizations promoting education and science in Germany and Europe, for example the German Research Foundation ( DFG ), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ), the University Rectors' Conference ( HRK ), the German Research Network ( DFN ) and European University Information Systems (EUNIS). In addition, there is close cooperation with the German Initiative for Network Information eV ( DINI ), to which ZKI members are sent to the board and advisory board.
