history

The company's roots go back to the development of the first LZ 1 airship by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (1838–1917) and the establishment of the Zeppelin Foundation in 1908.

In Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, airships were manufactured for several decades at the beginning of the 20th century and later operated the first airship line between Europe and America. With the accident in Lakehurst, in which the airship Hindenburg near New York was destroyed in 1937 , business in airship construction came to a standstill.

After the destruction of the Zeppelin production facilities during the Second World War, Metallwerk Friedrichshafen GmbH was founded in 1950, which was later renamed Zeppelin-Metallwerke GmbH. This resulted in today's Zeppelin GmbH. This initiated a realignment of business activities in the area of container and component construction. In 1954, the company was able to secure the sales and service rights for construction machinery from the American manufacturer Caterpillar for West Germany; since 1990 the partnership has existed for the entire, reunified Germany.

Over the years Zeppelin-Metallwerke GmbH has been able to expand its business activities in large parts of Western and Eastern Europe. In 1994 Zeppelin-Metallwerke GmbH, today's Zeppelin GmbH, took over the tasks of a management holding company. The operative business was taken over by newly founded or already existing companies in Germany and abroad. Further milestones in 2003 were the expansion of the rental business with construction equipment and construction site equipment and in 2006 the bundling of all activities relating to Caterpillar and MaK engines in a separate company, Zeppelin Power Systems GmbH & Co. KG. In 2010, the group divided its operational areas into five strategic business units; in 2016, a further sixth business unit - Z Lab - was added.

Airships have been built again in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance since 1993. Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG develops and manufactures zeppelins with new technology . The shareholders of Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik are Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH, which is also majority owned by the Zeppelin Foundation, and ZF Friedrichshafen AG .
