The Zermou is a dry valley in the region of Zinder in Niger .

course

The Zermou runs roughly in a north-south direction. Its total length is 19.29 kilometers. It has its origin in the rocky hill country in the west of the municipality of Damagaram Takaya . There he takes up several side valleys. The Zermou is dammed in the municipality of Gaffati by the Kassama dam and in the municipality of Albarkaram by the Toumbala dam , both of which were built in 2007. The reservoirs are used for irrigation, cattle breeding and fishing. South of the dams, the Zermou runs through the main town of the Zermou municipality of the same name. It crosses then east of the city Mirriah Department , the National Road 1 , crosses the rejection of Guidimouni and finally empties into the community Dogo in the Korama.

Hydrometry

Along with the Machaya, the Zermou is the most important tributary of the Korama . It only carries water in the winter and can then cause dangerous floods , as is usual in the dry valleys in the Sahel zone . The highest values recorded at the measuring station in Zermou are around 20 cubic meters of water per second. As a result of the great drought of the 1970s, the water flow was limited to small, largely isolated ponds, called mares . In the 2010s, the regular water flow increased massively again.
