Albarkaram (also: Alberkaram ) is a rural community in the Damagaram Takaya department in Niger .

geography

Albarkaram is located in the Sahel in the Alberkaram massif, which consists of crystalline quartzites , northeast of the city of Zinder . The neighboring communities of Albarkaram are Wamé in the north, Damagaram Takaya in the east, Gaffati in the south and Dakoussa in the west. The municipality is divided into 25 administrative villages, eleven traditional villages and 31 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Albarkaram (also: Alberkaram).

history

The rural community of Albarkaram emerged from the canton of Albarkaram in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. Since 2011 the rural community no longer belongs to the Mirriah department , but to the newly founded Damagaram Takaya department.

population

At the 2001 census, Albarkaram had 10,993 residents. For 2010, 14,926 inhabitants were calculated. Members of the Tuareg subgroup Ichiriffen, which mainly operates remote grazing, live in Albarkaram .

Economy and Infrastructure

The dry valley of Zermou , which runs through the municipality, is dammed at the Toumbala dam . The reservoir is used for agricultural irrigation, as a cattle trough and for fish farming.
