Gaffati (also: Gafati ) is a rural community in the Mirriah department in Niger .

geography

Gaffati lies in the Sahel zone and is cut through by a range of hills that are difficult to pass. The neighboring communities are Dakoussa in the northwest, Albarkaram in the north, Damagaram Takaya and Mazamni in the northeast, Zermou in the east, Mirriah in the southeast, Kolléram in the south and the regional capital Zinder in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 52 administrative villages, 37 traditional villages, 37 hamlets and 24 camps. The main town of the rural community is the village of Gaffati.

history

The place Gaffati was founded as the rulership of the village chief Daouda dan Ténimoun, who was in office from 1790 to 1799. Daouda is considered a member of the ruling dynasty of the Zinder Sultanate , which was only founded in 1812 by Sélimane dan Tintouma , but traces its lineage back to a pious man named Mallam who lived in the 17th century. Until 1899 Gaffati belonged to the Bornu Empire - from 1812 to the Sultanate of Zinder, which was part of Bornus - and then came to France . The French colonial administration established a canton in Gaffati at the beginning of the 20th century and allowed a small market to be held. The dissolved canton of Guéza was attached to the canton of Gaffati in 1924. In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the canton of Gaffati became the rural community of Gaffati. In 2008, 80 fields were flooded in the village of Angoual Zoulou and several houses were destroyed. 745 villagers were classified as victims.

population

At the 2001 census, Gaffati had 30,733 residents. For 2010, 41,731 inhabitants were calculated. Members of the Hausa subgroup Magouzawa live in Gaffati , who practice arable farming, agropastoralism and farmer grazing .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are 22 public primary schools in Gaffati. In 2002 a small middle school was opened. There are problems with the drinking water supply in the villages in the north and east of the rural community. The dry valley of Zermou , which runs through the municipality, is dammed at the Kassama dam . The reservoir is used for agricultural irrigation, as a cattle trough and for fish farming.
