Guidimouni is a rural community in Damagaram Takaya department in Niger .

geography

Guidimouni is located in the Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Mazamni in the north, Damagaram Takaya in the northeast, Guidiguir in the southeast, Gouchi in the south, Hamdara in the southwest and Zermou in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 43 administrative villages, 86 traditional villages, 61 hamlets, four camps and two water points. The main town of the rural community is the village of Guidimouni, located on a small lake.

Lake Mare de Lassouri lies on the border with the municipality of Damagaram Takaya , and its 34,000 hectare wetland has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 2005 .

history

According to tradition, the village was settled by Kanuri from Bornu in the 10th century . The French colonial administration established a canton in Guidimouni at the beginning of the 20th century and allowed a small market to be held. In 1932 the area of ​​the dissolved Mazamni canton was attached to the canton. In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the canton of Guidimouni became the rural communities of Goudimouni and Mazamni. Since 2011, both rural communities no longer belong to the Mirriah department , but to the newly founded Damagaram Takaya department.

At the 2001 census, Guidimouni had 38,923 inhabitants. For the year 2010, 52,849 inhabitants were calculated. Members of the Kanuri subgroup Dagra, who mainly practice agropastoralism , live in Guidimouni .

Economy and Infrastructure

The rural community is on National Road 1 . In 2012, the renovation of the 870-kilometer stretch of road to the regional capital of Zinder began. At the Guidimouni market, sugar cane in particular is traded, which is sold as far as the capital Niamey .
