history

In the 19th century, Gouchi and the villages of Matarawa and Yakaouda, which are now part of Gouchi's municipal area, were three Kanuri settlements without a common political administration, which was initially able to maintain its independence from the larger ruled areas in the surrounding area. They entered into an alliance with the Sossébaki state of Wacha . When the Sultan attacked by Zinder Wacha, Gouchi sided with the Sultan. After a series of minor wars, Gouchi was attached to the Zinder Sultanate at the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the French colonial administration established a canton in Gouchi. The market in the Gouchi village of Yakaouda was one of the small markets in the region that was approved by the French administration at the time. In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the Gouchi canton became the Gouchi rural community. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Magaria department , but to the newly founded Dungass department.

population

At the 2012 census, Gouchi had 71,612 residents. At the 2001 census, the population was 46,458. In Gouchi, next to Kanuri, live members of the Fulbe subgroup Daourawa, which mainly practices agropastoralism , as well as the Fulbe subgroups Bornanko'en, Dabanko'en and Katchinanko'en, which specialize in remote grazing.
