The Mare de Lassouri is a lake in the municipalities of Guidimouni and Damagaram Takaya in southern Niger .

geography

The Mare de Lassouri is located immediately northwest of the village of Lassouri and administratively belongs to the rural communities of Guidimouni and Damagaram Takaya, both of which are in the Damagaram Takaya department in the Zinder region.

The size of the water surface fluctuates strongly and averages 750 hectares with a volume of 1,800 cubic meters. The average depth is 0.8 meters, the maximum depth is 2 meters. The catchment area of the lake, which is 351  m above sea level, is 7600 hectares in size. The Mare de Lassouri is located in the southwest of the Lake Chad basin and belongs climatically to the Sahel zone , whereby the climate is comparatively very humid by Nigerian standards .

Besides the village of Lassouri, which had 1740 inhabitants at the 2012 census, there are other settlements around the lake. The hamlets Haouri Naroua II and Zangon Malam in the north-west, the hamlet Karé Goudou in the north and the hamlet Bounaré in the north-east of the Mare de Lassouri, like the village of Lassouri, belong to the municipality of Goudimouni. Localities of the Damagaram Takaya municipality are the village of Galdimari and the hamlet of Dagradi in the south and the hamlets of Barmadi I, Barmadi II and Barmadi III in the southwest of the lake.

The fish in the lake include the West African lungfish ( Protopterus annectens ) and the eel catfish ( Clarias anguillaris ).

Typical plants in the wetland of the Mare de Lassouri are Arabian acacia trees , ana trees and Mitragyna inermis, as well as barnacles and water lilies . In the bush and tree savannah around the lake is also found among other Detarium macrocarpum , Wüstendatteln , African baobabs , Gummiarabikumbäume , Boscia senegalensis , and Niembäume and bulrush , Cyperus papyrus , Tiger Lotus , Cenchrus biflorus , Indian jujubes , Osher , eragrostis , Tribulus and Kinkéliba .

The wetland of the Mare de Lassouri is under protection under the Ramsar Convention . The protected status of the 34,000-hectare area on 16 September 2005. The lake is threatening due to the influences of the weather to sand . The water quality could be affected by the use of pesticides in agriculture. Excessive deforestation and overgrazing also pose threats to the wetland ecosystem.

Economical meaning

The population uses the water from the Mare de Lassouri as drinking water, for household chores, for making bricks and for watering their pets. The annual yield from fishing is estimated to be between 2000 and 2500 kilograms. On an area of ​​around 20 hectares near the lake, irrigation farming is carried out with cassava , tomatoes, lettuce and cabbage, among other things . In addition, shepherds use the pastureland in the surrounding area.
