In the German Navy, a design for an ocean-going destroyer was designated as Destroyer 1945 .

General

The design of the destroyer 1945 was based on or replaced the unrealized designs for the destroyers 1936 D and 1936 E , in which the design documents were lost as a result of bomb hits. A special feature of the design was the return to propulsion with steam turbines , after diesel engines were still provided for the previous designs (such as the destroyer 1942 ). Because of the increasing danger from air raids, one focus was on improving air defense . The end of the Second World War prevented the implementation of the project; no destroyer of the type has yet been laid down .

technical description

3 cm M44 anti-aircraft gun
Torpedo of the type G7a , here as a training torpedo

hull

The hull of a 1945 destroyer , divided into 16 watertight compartments, completely welded and made of shipbuilding steel ST 52, would have had an overall length of 125.5 m, a maximum width of 11.8 m and a maximum draft of 3.88 m . The planned standard displacement should amount to 2,637  ts and the operational displacement to 3,700 ts.

drive

The drive should consist of four steam generators - Wagner superheated steam - boilers - and two geared turbine sets with which a total output of 80,000  PS (58.840  kW ) could be achieved. These would have given their power to two shafts , each with a three-winged 3.25 meter diameter screw . The maximum speed would have been 37  knots (69  km / h ) and 800 tons of fuel ( heavy oil ) should be able to be stored, which should lead to a maximum travel distance of 3,600  nautical miles (6,667 km) at 19 knots.

crew

A crew of 12 officers and 350 NCOs / crews (362 men) was planned.

Armament

artillery

The main armament was eight 12.8 cm Flak KM40 guns with a caliber length of 61 in four twin turrets. These guns should be set up in the center line of the boat, a pair in front of or on the bridge structure and behind or on the aft deckhouse.

Air defense

The anti-aircraft armament was to consist of four 5.5 cm Flak Device 58 in caliber length 77 and twelve 3 cm Flak M44 with caliber length 44 in six double M / 44 mounts.

Torpedoes

The planned torpedo armament would have consisted of two quadruple torpedo tube sets with a caliber of 53.3 cm, which could be pivoted through 360 ° . These would have been in the center line of the boat, one set behind the front and one aft chimney, and fired type G7a torpedoes . The transport of eight reserve torpedoes was planned.

Others

Furthermore, the planned armament included depth charges , individual depth charges and rails on the aft deck could have been scaffolded for laying up to 100 sea mines . For self-protection against mines, clearing otters would have been carried.

Dinghies

Four vehicles (probably motor dinghy , cutter and dinghy ) were planned as dinghies .

Remarks

  1. Koop / Schmolke give three values (37.0, 39.5 and 42.5 kn).
  1. Koop / Schmolke state that all German destroyers carried depth charges and depth charges.
