Zhang Bao (Shu)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zhang Bao ( Chinese  張苞  /  张苞 , Pinyin Zhāng Bāo , W.-G. Chang Pao ) was the eldest son of the Shu general Zhang Fei at the time of the Three Kingdoms in ancient China.

Historical sources (especially Chen Shou's Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms ) only note that he died prematurely. In Luo Guanzhong's novel The Story of the Three Kingdoms, however, Zhang Bao is an important general in the period after Liu Bei's death.

Zhang Bao's first appearance is at an audience with Liu Bei, to whom he tells of his father's murder. It was then that he met Guan Yu's son Guan Xing for the first time , with whom he argued over the leadership of the vanguard. Liu Bei brings peace between the two and lets them swear brotherhood like their fathers once did. From then on, Guan Xing and Zhang Bao are inseparable.

Zhang Bao takes part in numerous military campaigns, including Liu Bei's disastrous campaign against Wu ( Battle of Yiling ) and Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions against the Wei Dynasty . In the third campaign, while pursuing Generals Sun Li and Guo Huai, Zhang Bao was ambushed and fell in battle. Upon hearing of this, Zhuge Liang collapses and spits blood, allegedly hastening his death.
