Zhao Lihai

Zhao Lihai (born July 3, 1916 in Shanxi Province , † October 10, 2000 in Beijing ) was a Chinese lawyer . From 1996 to 2000 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Zhao studied at Yanjing University , the University of Chicago and Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in international law in 1944 . From 1945 to 1957 he was a professor at Wuhan University and Nanjing University before moving to Peking University in 1957 , where he taught international law until his death. In 1983 he also accepted a visiting professorship at New York University .

From 1981 to 1989, Zhao was Vice President of the Chinese Association of International Marine Affairs and from 1989 Vice President of the Chinese Society of the Law of the Sea , of which he was appointed President in 2000. He was a member of various Chinese government organizations in the field of maritime law.

Zhao was the first judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to die in office. He was succeeded by Xu Guangjian .
