Xu Guangjian

Xu Guangjian (born August 15, 1931 in Sichuan Province , China ) is a Chinese lawyer . From 2001 to 2007 he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

After studying at the Qinghua University Xu purchased in 1956 the master's degree of the People's University of China in Beijing . From 1956 to 1964 he was a lecturer in international law at China Foreign Affairs University before moving to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There Xu worked in the legal department from 1956 to 1995, interrupted only by a two-year stay in Sydney (1990-1992). Since 1995 he has been working as a consultant for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is also a professor at China Foreign Affairs University.

Xu is a member of the Chinese Society of International Law , took part in the 3rd UN Conference on the Law of the Sea as a member of the Chinese delegation and represented his country as a negotiator in various international law disputes.

On May 16, 2001, Xu became a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . He succeeded Zhao Lihai . On August 15, 2007, four years before his term ended, Xu resigned for unknown reasons. He was the first judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to resign from office.
