The Zhongnanshan Tunnel ( Chinese  秦岭 终 南山 公路 隧道 , Pinyin Qínlǐng Zhōngnánshān Lùsuìdào ) is an 18 km long motorway tunnel built between 2002 and 2007 in the People's Republic of China .

It is part of the highway between Xi'an and Ankang in the south of the central Chinese province of Shaanxi . The tunnel passes under the Qin Ling Mountains in the Zhongnanshan area and connects the catchment area of the Yellow River in northern China with that of the Yangtze in the south of the country.

Planning for the Zhongnanshan tunnel began in the 1990s, and construction began in March 2002. On January 20, 2007, two years earlier than planned, the two-tube structure was opened. The construction costs amounted to around 330 million euros.

At exactly 18,040 meters, the Zhongnanshan Tunnel is the second longest motorway tunnel and the third longest road tunnel in the world after the Lærdals Tunnel in Norway and the Yamate Tunnel in Tokyo . Over a length of about 4 km it is more than 1000 m below the surface of the Zhongnanshan, the maximum depth is 1640 m. The tunnel has three ventilation shafts.
