biography

Zhu, a former Shangcheng District real estate worker at Hangzhou City City Housing Bureau , was sentenced in 1999 for inciting subversion of state power and spent five and a half years in prison for founding Opposition Party Magazine . After his release in 2006, he spoke out against the torture suffered in prison and continued democratization. In 2007, after a confrontation with a police officer who questioned his son, he was arrested again and sentenced to two years in prison for "beating the police and obstructing the civil service".

Zhu was abducted by the police on March 7, 2011. Officers also ransacked his home, confiscated two computers and other items. He was criminally arrested on April 11, 2011 on suspicion of inciting subversion of state power and formally arrested on the same charge. His wife, Zhang Hangli, appealed to the authorities in July 2011 to bail Zhu because he had been ill for a long time, but her application was denied and the lawsuit against Zhu continued. On October 25, 2011, the Shangcheng District People's Court notified Zhu's attorney that it had approved a motion to quash the charges against Zhu, but he remained detained. According to the attorney, the procuratorate cited " changes in the actual evidence " to dismiss the charges.

Although Zhu suffers from a variety of illnesses, some of which were caused by torture or exacerbated by conditions in the prison, the authorities ignored or denied the family's requests for medical treatment. His wife faced reprisals for demanding his release and the police threatened not to talk about her husband's health. Zhu was released in March 2018 after serving his full sentence.
