Carpenter's pencil

Unsharpened carpenter pencils with the typical rectangular lead

The carpenter's pencil (also called a carpenter's pencil) is used to mark materials with a rough, solid surface. It is used as a job-specific tool in many construction trades . It differs from the normal pencil in size, shape and function.

Structure and shape

The usual carpenter's pencil usually has an elliptical or square-oval cross-section , sometimes it is also rectangular. This prevents the pen from rolling down sloping surfaces. His lead has a rectangular cross-section with very different side lengths in order to create a narrow line when the broad side is placed against a ruler and yet not break off. Commercially available lengths are 8.5 cm, 17.5 cm, 24 cm and 30 cm.

Carpenter's pencils have an HB lead , which, like pencils, is made of graphite and clay mineral and is therefore gray in color.

There are also graphite leads with a water-soluble dye additive, e.g. B. Methylene Blue , which is suitable for drawing on a damp surface.

use

The carpenter's pencil is mainly used on construction sites by builders, such as B. carpenters , bricklayers , concrete and reinforced concrete builders , etc., as well as in the home improvement area for marking on materials such. B. wood, concrete or masonry are used. Since it does not fit into a normal sharpener due to the wide, non-conical tip , it is usually sharpened with a knife or rubbed at an angle on a rough surface (concrete wall, sandpaper, etc.). However, there are also special sharpeners for carpenter's pencils.

In addition, the carpenter's pencil and the multi-graph pen are used as advertising material and are mainly distributed at trade fairs or by sales representatives. The popularity as an advertising medium is that both pen forms offer relatively large advertising space on the wooden casing, which can be printed with trade names, company logos or company addresses, and are cheaper to buy than z. B. Folding rules ("folding rules"). Since they are consumed with use, they are also gladly accepted as promotional gifts.

further explanation

Multi-graph pen

The multi-graph pen (also known as the multi-graph pen) is similar to the carpenter's pencil. The pen is usually three-edged and has a particularly soft lead, which is suitable for writing on smooth surfaces such as tiles, glass, metal or foam polystyrene. Not only gray graphite leads, but also red, green and blue leads are offered. The different lead colors are important so that the multi-graph pen can be used on differently colored surfaces. The multi-graph pen is also called a giant pencil or triangular pencil. There are also multi-graph pens with a hexagonal, elliptical or round cross-section.

Carpenter pencil

The carpenter's pencil is a special form of the multi-graph pen. It is 17.5 cm long, has a round wooden jacket and a special wet writing lead that can also be used to draw on wet wood.

Steinhauerstift

Carpenter's pencils with a harder lead (e.g. a 6H lead or a 20H lead) are called stonemason pencils. Stone carving pens are used for recording information on concrete or stone, which are very hard surfaces.

Asian bamboo stick

In Japan, instead of carpenter pencils, bamboo shavings are traditionally used, which are tapered to a cutting edge and moistened with Indian ink for use.
