Life

Zindzi Mandela was the youngest daughter of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela . Her childhood was marked by the constant absence of her imprisoned father and reprisals against the family. In 1972 she wrote a letter to the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid , complaining about the politically motivated attacks against her family. Already in her youth, she wrote poems that were first published in 1978 as a book called Black as I Am and later translated into German by Annemarie and Heinrich Böll .

She also became known for her speech My Father Says ... , in which she publicly presented in 1985 her father's rejection of the government's offer to release him under certain conditions. Zindzi Mandela was included in the Daughters of Africa anthology published in 1992 by Margaret Busby in London and New York.

In 1993 she married the shopkeeper Zwelibansi Hlongwane. She is portrayed by Moshidi Motshegwa in the 1996 drama Mandela and de Klerk . A Broadway - Musical based on the memories of Zindzi Mandela was in 2008 in the planning.

In 2008 she went to court for failing to pay the rent on her house. In 2019 she was noticed by a tweet that caused media and party political turmoil in her home country. In doing so, she campaigned against the "apologists of apartheid " and for the expropriation of white landowners.

Mandela died in a Johannesburg hospital on July 13, 2020. She leaves four children.
