The Tsiolkovsky Medal ( Russian Знак Циолковского ) is the highest award of the Russian space agency Roskosmos . It is named after the space pioneer Konstantin Eduardowitsch Ziolkowski (1857–1935), who derived important theoretical foundations for space travel .

The medal was originally awarded by the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 1954, at a meeting of the Academy's Presidium, it was decided to award a Ziolkowski Medal every three years to domestic and foreign scientists who have made a name for themselves in the field of interplanetary transport .

After the establishment of Roskosmos, the awarding of the Ziolkowski Medal was taken over by the agency from 2002. It is awarded to employees of the Russian space industry who have made a significant contribution and active participation in basic research in the field of conquest and use of space, as well as to foreigners for a significant contribution to the conduct of scientific space research.
