Peter Diamandis (born May 20, 1961 in New York , USA) is an American aerospace engineer. He is founder of the X-Prize Foundation and co-founder of International Space University , Singularity University , Zero Gravity Corporation , healthcare company Human Longevity Inc. and the first space tourism company Space Adventures and asteroid mining company Planetary Resources .

He was born in the Bronx of New York City ; his parents immigrated to the United States from Mytilini , Greece . Diamandis studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , the subjects Molecular Genetics and aerospace engineering and received his doctoral degree from the Harvard Medical School .

In 1995 he set up the X-Prize Foundation to initially attract donors for the prize money. Diamandis got the idea in 1994 when he came across a report on the flight of the Spirit of St. Louis . He and his friend Gregg Maryniak made the first award at a festive evening event on May 18, 1996 in a dining room of the Racquet Club on Kingshighway in St. Louis , USA .

In January 1996, the X-Prize Foundation announced the so-called Ansari X-Prize competition. The winner should receive a prize of ten million US dollars if he succeeds in completing a suborbital space flight without government support by January 1, 2005 . The 2004 winner was the SpaceShipOne project.

In September 2007 he announced the Google Lunar X-Prize , which is about a moon mission.

He was awarded the Ziolkowski Medal for his services to space travel . For 2016 he was awarded the IRI Medal .

Diamandis is (co-) author of the New York Times bestseller Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think and BOLD: How to Go Big, Create Wealth, and Impact the World . He wrote both books together with Steven Kotler .
