from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Cástris (also: São Bento de Cástris ) was a monastery of the Cistercian women in Malagueira , municipality of Évora , in Portugal from 1274 to 1890 .

history

In 1274, outside the walls of Évora, the Cistercian monastery of São Bento de Cástris ("Saint Benedict") was privately donated, which was under the supervision of the Alcobaça monastery. Like all Portuguese monasteries after the victory of the Liberals in the Miguelistenkrieg , Castris Abbey was closed to newcomers in 1834. The last nun died in 1890. The buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved and have been a listed building since 1922. Peugniez praises them as a "magnifique ensemble". Since 2013, an annual scientific colloquium has been held under the title “Residência Cisterciense S. Bento de Cástris” to research the monastery and furthermore the Cistercian order in Portugal, the files of which are published. The Brazilian Cistercian Congregation is currently (2017) investigating the possibility of repopulation.
