Cistercian Abbey of Epinlieu
The Cistercian Abbey Epinlieu was 1216-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Mons , province of Hainaut in Belgium .
history
Blessed Beatrix von Lens founded the Epinlieu monastery ("place of thorns", based on a relic from Christ's crown of thorns ) in Ghlin at the gates of Mons on the Haine river in 1216 . In 1677 the monastery buildings were abandoned due to military reasons and turned into a fort. The nuns settled in the town of Mons (on rue des Cinq Visages , now a music school). In the course of the advance of the French Revolution , the monastery was closed in 1796.
