The Cistercian abbey Guldenberg (French: Mont d'Or ) was a monastery of the Cistercian women from 1214 to 1797 , first in Moorsele west of Wevelgem , from 1242 in Wevelgem, West Flanders Province , Belgium .

history

The Wevelgem nunnery was founded in 1214 by a countess of Kortrijk in Moorsele and from 1242 it was gradually moved to the river Leie at a short distance . After some devastation, the structurally impressive monastery flourished in the 18th century. Among the more important of the 36 abbesses were Elisabeth de La Tramerie (1554–1594), Beatrix vanden Abeele (1599–1621), Augustina Peuterman (1727–1769), Caroline de Patin (1769–1784) and Alberica de Madre (1788–1797 ), who left the monastery with 35 sisters, which was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1797. Almost all the monastery buildings were dismantled. Two entrance gates and a barn are left of the monastery estate. The abbey (like Stift Heiligenkreuz ) owned a thorn relic , which is now in the Sint-Hilariuskerk in Wevelgem.
