Cistercian Abbey Isles (Auxerre)
The Cistercian Abbey of Isles was a French monastery of the Cistercian sisters near and in Auxerre , Yonne department , in the diocese of Auxerre from 1219 to 1791 .
history
La Celle monastery, founded in Saint-Georges-sur-Baulche west of Auxerre in 1219 and reinforced by the Paris monastery of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs , moved to Orgelaine-sur-Yonne (today: Monéteau ), north , in 1229 thanks to a further donation Auxerre, occupied four islands there and called itself Notre-Dame-des-Isles ("Maria islands", from French île , old form isle = island). In 1636 the monastery moved to the city of Auxerre and was closed there by the French Revolution in 1791 . In 2004, the last remains in Monéteau were archaeologically secured. In Monéteau the Rue des Isles , in Auxerre the Rue de la Plaine des Isles reminds of the monastery.
