Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Catherine-du-Mont-de-Semnoz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Catherine-du-Mont-de-Semnoz (also: Annecy or Semnoz ) was a monastery of the Cistercian women in Annecy , Haute-Savoie , France from 1179 to 1780 .

history

The Cistercian Abbey of Bonlieu (Haute-Savoie) founded the nunnery Sainte-Catherine in 1179 (or a little later) in the Semnoz massif four kilometers from Annecy , which was emancipated from the mother monastery in 1242 and elevated to the status of an abbey. The order reformer Louise de Ballon (1591–1668) emerged from the monastery, but left it because of criticism of the lack of rule observation. 1772–1780 the last nuns went to Annecy in the Bonlieu Abbey, which has since been moved there. At the former location, where few remains are scattered, the field name Sainte-Catherine and the Chemin de Sainte-Catherine are reminiscent of the monastery.
