The Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Catherine-du-Mont-de-Semnoz was founded from Bonlieu in 1179 (or later) . In 1648 the Bonlieu convent moved to the city of Annecy (without giving up the old place entirely) and in 1780 took in the last nuns of Sainte-Catherine. In 1793 the French Revolution in Annecy closed the monastery. In the hamlet of Bonlieu, in the street Impasse de l'Abbaye, remains of the abbey have been built into a farm. In Annecy, the Rue de Bonlieu and the name of the Center-Forum Bonlieu cultural center are reminiscent of the former monastery.
