Cistercian Abbey of Stettin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Stettin (also: Szczecin ) was 1243-1539 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Stettin in Pomerania , now in Poland.

history

In 1243, Duke Barnim I of Pomerania, together with the establishment of the city of Stettin, also founded the Cistercian monastery, which founded three daughter monasteries: 1280 in Gartz ; 1288 Wollin Monastery ; 1296 Reetz Monastery in Reetz (today: Recz ). The monastery was known as “Mariental” (because of the dedication to the Mother of God), the monastery church later also as Maria Magdalena church. Under the name of Katharinenkirche, it was the only building in the monastery to be preserved when the convent was dissolved as part of the Reformation in 1539, but fell victim to the demolition frenzy of that time in 1904. It stood on the stuff place between the castle and the Oder . The street name Frauenstraße (now synonymous with "Panieńska") reminds of the former monastery.
