Cistercian Abbey of Voisins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Voisins was 1214-1778 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Saint-Ay , Loiret , France.

history

A monastery founded in the forest of Bucy-Saint-Liphard in 1207 was replaced by a Cistercian convent in 1212 by the Bishop of Orléans , who moved a few kilometers south to Saint-Ay (between Orléans and Meung-sur-Loire ) in the hamlet of Voisins in 1214 . From 1563 the abbess was no longer elected by the convent, but appointed by the king. The monastery, which became Jansenist in the 17th century , suffered a decline in the 18th century (from 1749 without an abbess). In 1778 it was dissolved for lack of nuns. The remaining goods went to the Cistercian Abbey of Lieu-Notre-Dame (Romorantin-Lanthenay) . In the 19th century the monastery buildings were dismantled. Only the abbess house remained as Voisins Castle, which, according to various private owners, has been the seat of an association since 2004, which has converted the former monastery grounds into a herboretum (biotope with fruit trees, medicinal plants, gardens and parks).
