Civil Order for Charity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The civil order for charity was founded on May 17, 1856 by Queen Isabella II as a Spanish Order of Merit .

The reason for this was the constant cholera epidemics since 1820 in the Philippines and later also in Spain around 1854, which required many voluntary work to combat it. These humanitarian achievements should be honored with this medal . Changes to the statutes one year later on December 30, 1857 expanded the circle of possible recipients. In addition to the fact that the order was created for men and women, aid in the event of accidents , disasters and epidemics was also recognized.

Order classes

The order had three classes. Financial support was given to those in need with the award.

Order decoration

A six-pointed white enameled star had a gold border and the star tips were set with small gold balls. The black border was set off by gold lilies. Golden rays broke out in the six corners of the star. A golden palm wreath with the suspension ring was attached to the top pointing upwards. In the center of the star was a round medallion that showed a "symbol of mercy" on blue enamel in gold. The obverse was surrounded by a gold-rimmed red band with the motto of the order “A la caridad” and three stars. The back had the initials of the founder “I. 2. "for Isabella II. And the circlet in blue the inscription" Beneficencia publica ".

Ribbon and way of wearing

The white ribbon had a black stripe on both sides.

To honor the first class, the order decoration was on a larger star. The twelve-pointed, brilliant star was made of silver and a golden palm wreath was visible between the rays. The second grade wore the decoration as a neck medal , while the third grade attached it to the left breast.
