The Schwartauer See (also: Kurparksee ) is an artificially created body of water in the spa gardens of Bad Schwartau in Schleswig-Holstein .

The pond has a rectangular shape running from north to south with a semicircular bay at the southern end. In the north, a dam largely separates it from the course of the Schwartau , with the exception of a (bridged) connection in the northeast of the lake.

The lake is about 180 feet wide, 250 feet long and very flat, so he of silting is threatened. Since May 21, 1999, it has been part of the "Schwartautal nature experience area".

In the east and south the lake is surrounded by the "Mönchskamp" ridge.

Emergence

After Bad Schwartau had become a spa in 1913, there was a need for an appropriate spa park, if possible with an appropriate lake. There were also plans (including by Harry Maasz ) to transform the approximately 17 hectare large area of the Schwartau meadows east of the Riesebusch, through which the Schwartau flows, into a lake.

  • In 1927, planning began to straighten the Schwartau course, which was implemented in the area where it flows into the Trave .
  • On December 28, 1933, the city council of Bad Schwartau suggested the construction of a lake to the Oldenburg Ministry of the Interior as a labor market policy measure as part of the voluntary labor service .
  • From 1934 a proposal by the regional council was implemented in Eutin. As part of the straightening of the lower reaches of the Schwartau, around 300,000 cubic meters of peat and moorland, which were used for the construction of an airfield, were excavated and the Schwartauer See was created by 1936 . The construction work was carried out by construction companies employing 230 people from the voluntary labor service (which - as a forerunner of the Reich Labor Service - was based in Labor Service Camp 5/70 in Riesebusch ).
