Zlatni rt
The forest park Zlatni rt (Croatian for " Golden Cape "), also known under the name Punta Corrente , is the oldest protected area in the Istria County and one of the oldest in Croatia .
description
Zlatni rt is located on the peninsula of the same name about 1.5 km south of the old town of Rovinj (Croatia) and has an area of 52.4 ha . The park also extends over the areas of Punta Corrente , Montauro , Škaraba , Monvi and Monte Mulini .
In Forest Park, parts replaced a natural forest ( pines , oaks , olive trees , ...) and plantations of exotic trees and plants (z. B. Aleppo pines , ginkgo trees , eucalyptus , Himalayan cedars , Douglas firs ...) from. This makes Zlatni rt the largest botanical garden in Istria.
At the western end of the peninsula ( Cape Montauro ) there is an old quarry that was already used in Roman times and later supplied the building material for the Doge's Palace and other buildings in Venice . The steep rock faces are now used for climbing or as a natural lookout point.
history
Around 1890, the Austrian industrialist and knight Johann Georg von Hütterott began designing the forest south of Rovinj , his goal was a climatic health resort called Cap Aureo (Latin for Golden Cape), hotels, villas and a swimming and sports area were planned . Hütterott also bought the four islands Sveti Andrija (St. Andreas), Maškin , Šturago and Sveti Ivan (St. Johannes). Due to his early death, the project was not completed, but the visionary idea began the development of tourism in Rovinj. Many of the completed systems still exist today.
In 1961 Zlatni rt was declared a nature reserve together with Cape Gustinja near Vestar , the Palud moor and bird reserve and some smaller islands and is therefore closed to motor vehicles.
