After further studies in Berlin with Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schering, he worked from 1941 to 1967 as a professor at the " Franz Liszt Music Academy " in Budapest. He also headed the department for Protestant church music until its dissolution in 1949 by the rulers at the time and is now considered one of the most prominent figures in European church music in the 20th century.

In addition to the most varied of church music genres, his compositional work also includes numerous orchestral works and diverse choral and chamber music . Bach and Liszt research owe pioneering new knowledge to his musicological activity. The lasting international resonance of his music is documented not least by the around one hundred first publications from his compositional estate and by numerous CD recordings that have since appeared in Germany, Hungary , Sweden and the USA .
