Zoltán Szabó (* 1965 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian - American mathematician who deals with topology .

Life

Szabo studied at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest (Bachelor 1990) and then at Rutgers University , where he received his doctorate in 1994 with Ted Petrie . From 1994 he was an instructor and from 1996 assistant professor at Princeton University , where he became an associate professor in 2000 and professor in 2002 after a year at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor . Since 2005 he has been the Henry Burchard Fine Professor of Mathematics there.

With Peter Ozsváth he developed the Heegaard-Floer homology ; both received the Oswald Veblen Prize in 2007 . With John Morgan and Clifford Taubes he proved the Thom conjecture in 1994 , independently of Peter Kronheimer and Tomasz Mrowka .

He was a Packard Fellow from 1998 to 2003 and a Sloan Research Fellow from 1998 to 2000 . Szabo was invited speaker with Ozsvath at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2006 in Madrid ( Heegaard diagrams and Floer homology ). In 2004 he gave a plenary lecture with Ozsváth at the 4th European Congress of Mathematicians ( On Heegaard diagrams and holomorphic discs ).
