The Zombie (originally also Zombie Punch ) is a very strong cocktail made from rum and fruit juices , which was named after its effect on the consumer and is one of the most famous tiki drinks.

history

The zombie first appeared as Zombie Punch in the 1930s and goes back to Donn Beach (actually Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gannt), an entrepreneur who owned, among other things, the Don the Beachcomber restaurant in Hollywood . Allegedly, he mixed it up one afternoon in 1934 for a hungover friend who stopped by this restaurant before leaving for San Francisco . After killing three zombies, he left. When he came back several days later, he said he had felt like an undead the entire flight , hence the name zombie .

The exact preparation of the zombies that were served at Don the Beachcomber remained unknown at the time, as Don did not publish his recipes. In addition, Don is said to have varied his recipe several times over the years. Due to the high alcohol content, Don the Beachcomber limited the serving of its signature drink to two per guest for years.

preparation

There are a large number of recipe variations which essentially have in common that they contain at least three, but often also five or six types of rum, including high-proof over 70 percent by volume . There may also be fruit liqueurs and various types of fruit juices. The smooth, fruity taste then causes the high alcohol content of the drink to be masked.

The original recipe for the drink, which was served at Don the Beachcomber in the mid-1930s , remained unknown until the 2000s, as the traditional records of previous bartenders at the restaurant only listed individual ingredients in encrypted form. According to research by the cocktail book author Jeff Berry , the original Zombie Punch from 1934 consisted of approx. 45  ml of golden Puerto Rican rum as well as golden or dark Jamaica rum, 30 ml of high-proof Demerara rum ( Lemon Hart 151 with 75% vol.) , 22.5 ml of lemon juice , 15 ml Falernum , 15 ml "Don's mix" (consisting of 2 parts of grapefruit juice and 1 part sugar syrup with cinnamon flavor ), 1  BL grenadine , 6 drops Pernod and 1  Dash Angostura . All ingredients were briefly mixed with about 180 ml of crushed ice in an electric blender , poured into a tall beaker, filled with fresh ice cubes and garnished with a sprig of mint .
