CPC zones of Cordoba, in the northwest of Argüello

The Zona Argüello is one of the eleven CPC zones in the city of Córdoba and is located in the northwest of the city, for the most part north of the Río Suquía . The city district is characterized by settlements of the upper middle class and upper class and has 137,730 inhabitants (2001). The name comes from the largest district of the district, Argüello , in the central area of the area.

geography

The Río Suquía forms the southern border of the Zona Argüello and is the only year-round natural watercourse in the area. Exceptions are the La Carolina and Villa Warcalde neighborhoods , which are south of the river. The Canal Maestro Norte branches off from the Río Suquía to the west of the area and flows through the area from southwest to northeast.

The heights rise from southeast to north from about 400 m directly on the Río Suquía to 480 m on the border with Villa Allende . A distinctive slope limits the Cerro de las Rosas district to the south and south-east.

history

The Cerro de las Rosas in 1935

The oldest areas are the core areas of the districts Cerro de las Rosas , Argüello and the west of the Los Boulevares district . Argüello as the oldest district developed around the Argüello train station, inaugurated in 1889, and the road network was built from 1908. In 1928 the district of Cerro de las Rosas followed , which initially had the character of a local recreation area, but from 1980 onwards became a center of gastronomy and trade.

Cityscape and architecture

Almost the entire area of the Zona Argüello is built-up, only in the northeast there is a small undeveloped area that is only used for agriculture to a very limited extent. The area is characterized by loose development, buildings with more than three floors are the exception. Large plots with villa architecture can be found in the Cerro de las Rosas area in particular . The area consists almost entirely of residential areas.

While most of the city is dominated by upscale neighborhoods, there are also some poorer areas. These include in particular the areas around the former car racing track ( Barrio Autódromo in the north) and some informal settlements in the Argüello Norte district in the central area of the zone.

economy

The commercial and gastronomic center of the area is the central area of the Cerro de las Rosas district in the southeast of the area. The "Cerro" is considered one of the gastronomic centers of Cordoba, but there are also retail outlets and banks in this area.

Notable industrial settlements are only to be found in the northeast of the area in the Los Boulevares district and to a lesser extent on Avenida Donato Álvarez and Avenida Recta Martinoli , the two major arteries of the area. A few small businesses can be found in the sprawling residential areas.

Culture and sights

Cultural centers

The CPC Argüello houses a cultural center run by the city of Córdoba with regular events. There is also a children's theater in Argüello.

nightlife

With a few bars and discos, the Cerro de las Rosas is one of the smaller nightlife focal points of Cordoba. Most of the clubs are of the more upscale category. Other discos can be found in Villa Belgrano and on Avenida Donato Álvarez . In the rest of the area there are only a few smaller bars. The city of Villa Allende , which is directly adjacent to the area, has attracted numerous clubs with more liberal curfew regulations than Córdoba.

Attractions

The most notable building in the area is the Colegio La Salle on Avenida Recta Martinoli (Barrio Argüello), a large school built between 1936 and 1938 according to plans by José María Acosta in the historicism style with neo-Romanesque influences in the middle of a park. The school is still in operation today.

The CPC Argüello with its modern architecture was built according to plans by Miguel Ángel Roca in 1994 and is the oldest CPC (Municipal Participation Center) in the city.

In the districts of Cerro de las Rosas and the adjacent Villa Belgrano there are numerous large villas, some of them from the early 20th century. The architecture is mixed and often streaked with historicist lines. Another attraction is the Villa Warcalde quarter , which has the character of a garden city.

There are numerous monuments on the various green spaces in the area. The most important is the monument in honor of General José María Paz in Parque Autóctono.

On the roundabout Nudo Vial 14 stands the sculpture Mujer Urbana by Antonio Seguí , which is part of an ensemble called Familia Urbana , which is spread across the city.

Parks and green spaces

The Parque de las Naciones is a small park on the slope of the Cerro de las Rosas, which is used by the residents as a local recreation area. In the immediate vicinity is the Parque Autóctono , also on a hillside. The monument in honor of José María Paz in this park also acts as a viewpoint over the city of Cordoba.

Infrastructure

The streets Avenida Rafael Núñez , Avenida Donato Alvarez , Avenida Recta Martinoli and Avenida Ricardo Rojas are connecting the main arteries that run through the area in southeast-northwest direction and with the city center as well as the locations of the Sierras Chicas. The Avenida Rodríguez del Busto belongs to the inner ring system of Córdoba, the previously unfinished Ronda Urbana . The Avenida de Circunvalación ring road ends north of the Argüello district.

The Córdoba – Cruz del Eje railway runs from south-east to north-west through the area; A local train, the Tren de las Sierras, operated by a diesel multiple unit runs on it . A planned extension to a light rail, the Ferrourbano Córdoba , has not yet been completed.

particularities

Part of the area overlaps with the territorial claims of the cities of Villa Allende and Saldán . An agreement was signed with Saldán in 1993 that allows this city to provide services and collect fees in a limited area in the extreme northwest of the Zona Argüello.

Barrio Argüello and the neighboring areas are the only districts of Córdoba to have their own telephone code (03543).
