Callitris neocaledonica is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). This endemic occurs only on the island of Grande Terre .

description

Callitris neocaledonica grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree with a spherical to candelabra-shaped crown . The scaly bark of the short and twisted trunk is fibrous.

The young, needle-shaped leaves are arranged opposite to one another on the branches. The older leaves are short and stiff.

The male cones are at the end of the branches and are spherical in shape with a length of 2 to 3 millimeters and a thickness of 1.5 to 2 millimeters. The female cones are 0.8 to 1 cm long and about 0.7 cm thick. The pyramidal seeds are winged.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Callitris neocaledonica is on the island of Grande Terre, part of New Caledonia . It includes the Massif du Humboldt , Massif de Kouakoué and Montagne des Sources located in the southern province of the island . The total distribution area covers about 257 km² and is divided into over ten populations .

Callitris neocaledonica thrives at altitudes of 950 to 1350 meters. It grows mainly in dense forests and maquis that form on ultramafic soils .

Systematics

It was first described as Callitris neocaledonica in 1914 by Richard Arnold Dümmer in Journal of Botany, British and Foreign , Volume 52, Page 239.

Hazard and protection

Callitris neocaledonica is classified as "low risk" in the IUCN Red List . The total stock is estimated at over 10,000 trees. Most of the stocks are located within protected areas. Forest fires are given as the main risk factor.
